Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande delivered the opening address at the third Pan-African Conference, hosted by the International Association of Colleges in Cape Town.

The Minister said that according to Statistics South Africa, there are 3,7 million youths aged between 18 and 24 that are unemployed and do not attend education institutions.

Of these, over 500 000 of them do not even have primary school education. He said universities need to recognise FET colleges, instead of undermining their standards.

Nzimande also urged the public and private sector to play a role in empowering graduates by helping them acquire the relevant skills, through internships and learnerships.
