The National Union of Mineworkers signed a wage increase agreement with the Chamber of Mines affiliated coal mines in Johannesburg today.

NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka says mine workers in the sector have not engaged in any illegal strikes this year.

Seshoka says an increase of five-percent was agreed upon as well as a promise that in a few months, further negotiations will be entered into for another salary adjustment.

Meanwhile, Mining Minister Susan Shabangu has warned companies not to retrench workers through unilateral action.
