Ten prisoners have been wounded, two of them critically, at the Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.

This follows reports of violence in at least three prisons in the country. The fighting at Pollsmoor follows riots reported two weeks ago at Groenpunt Correctional facility in the Free State, followed by an incident at the weekend at St Albans in Port Elizabeth.

Western Cape Correctional Services Department's Regional Commissioner, Delekile Klaas said that one of the injured inmates is in ICU at Groote Schuur Hospital.

“Seven of them have been discharged from hospital; the situation has now been normalised” Klaas said.

Klaas said that the police had been called and no further incidents are anticipated.

“All these acts were gang related, the fight was initially amongst (members of the gang) 26’s, later the 28’s fought the 26’s” Klaas added
