The Congress of South African Trade Union today rejected Eskom’s proposed 16 percent tariff increase.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa's public hearings took place in Mbombela today.

COSATU's provincial secretary Fidel Mlombo has called on Nersa to reject Eskom's tariff increase application.

Eskom spokesperson Hilary Joffe said the tariff hike would help the country to keep the lights on.

Joffe said the country needs a secure supply of electricity, and for that a sustainable electricity industry.

“But as Eskom, we are very aware on the impact of the higher tariffs on the economy and particularly poor households; we have tried to find a balance between those things, in particular to provide some protection for poor households from the impact of the increases” Joffe added.
