The Congress of South African Trade Union on Wednesday said the farmworkers strike in the Western Cape has been suspended for one week, but the Black Association of the Wine and Spirit Industry today said the strike is not over.

Agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg on Thursday said a large number of Western Cape farmworkers were back at work, on the first day after strike action was suspended.

According to Cosatu, the strike would be resumed next Wednesday if Agri SA stopped honouring commitments to local-level agreements.

Some farmworkers in the province spoke to the Bush Radio’s reporters on Thursday, saying all they want is a liveable salary.

Some of the workers said they are scared to speak because they could get retrenched.
