A move by the Labour Ministry to hold more
public hearings in farming communities is expected to defuse tensions around
the indefinite farmworkers strike in the Western Cape
The hearings will serve as forums where
farmers and workers can voice their grievances.
Hearings were held late in 2012.
Karel Swartz from Commercial Stevedoring Alliance
of Allied Workers Union said they welcome the commission.
Swarts adds said that they don’t trust the
police particularly in the rural areas and that is why they say there is no
trust relationship between the farmers and the farmworkers’ and they have
called for action.
Swarts said that they wasn’t action first before
anything paving any relationship on another level, he adds that they first have
to engage and build the relationship.
Furthermore Swarts said there is no
relationship on the farms but they can talk about it at a later stage but the
workers have asked for this commission to go ahead.
