The KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu has responded calls for him to resign as premature and irrelevant.

Mchunu was responding to the call by the Inkatha Freedom Party which called for his resignation following the deaths of seven people during a Road Traffic Inspectorate recruitment test in Pietermaritzburg last week.

The aspirant traffic officers were ordered to run a 4km as part of their fitness test.

The South African Communist Party has called for a commission of inquiry into the incident.

SACP Secretary General Themba Mthembu said the commission would be able to establish, what led to the death of those people.

Mthembu further said the party believes that whatever action is taken should be determined by the outcome of the commission of enquiry.
