The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services has urged the Department of Correctional Services to deal with fights that occur among inmates in correctional centres around the country.

This follows the injury of 10 inmates at the Pollsmoor Correctional Facility after a fight broke out between two gang groups.

Mr Vincent Smith, Chairperson of the Committee, said that the Committee will interrogate measures put in place by the Department to fight gangsterism in the country’s prisons early in the 2013 Parliamentary Session.

Smith explains that as the committee are concerned about the continues uprising and riots in the countries prison facilities St Albans a few days ago, Pollsmor last week and Groen punt in the beginning of January.

Smith says the committee urges the department to come up with a comprehensive anti gang strategy and the committee will in all likelihood ask the department to present it them in the beginning of the first term of 2013.
