Cosatu: Farmworkers' will strike if wage implementation does not take place

Congress of South African Trade Union together with all agricultural unions today held a press conference, in regards with another protest action for farmworkers.

Cosatu said it is concerned about an orchestrated political attempt by farmers to dodge and undermine new minimum wages.

Cosatu said farmworkers will embark on further protest action if farmers fail to implement new minimum wage of R105.5 per day.

Organiser and Educator of Cosatu Mike Louw said as Cosatu they are going to call upon farmworkers to strike again if their wage increases are not implemented by the 1st of March.

Louw adds that the reason for it is, it seems that even before the implementation date, farmers are threatening that they are going to retrench and there are those who are already dismissing workers.

Louw said that as Cosatu they believe that this is an orchestrated response and they are not acting in the interest of the sector as a whole.
