The Democratic Alliance said that three years of activism and mobilisation in support of the youth wage subsidy appears to have finally paid off especially for many of the of the 4.8 million people aged between 15 and 18 years in South Africa who are trapped in unemployment.

DA Shadow Minister of Finance Tim Harris said this appears to be a significant victory for the DA in what has been a long and painstaking fight in Parliament and on the streets of South Africa.

Harris says given this news, he will on Friday  write to Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan, to enquire on the status of the implementation of the youth wage subsidy.

Harris adds that he will also urge Minister Gordhan to ensure that the design will be in line with that contained in National Treasury’s document on the youth wage subsidy, which was published in February 2011.
