The Department of Home Affairs today said the green bar-coded Identity Documents will be phased out to make way for a smart card ID.

The initiative was announced in 2012 by the then Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

Home Affairs said the Smart Card ID would have biometric technology and unique fingerprints belonging to an individual, which would assist in curbing identity fraud.

Minister Naledi Pandor’s Spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele said the department plans to phase out all ID books in seven years time.

Ngqengelele added that the Minister is expected to make an announcement soon about the process of phasing out the ID books.
