The Democratic Alliance, on a site-visit to a school outside East London in the Eastern Cape, found that there were no toilets available at the school.
The Bulugha Primary School serves 250 learners between grades 1 and 2.
The Department of Education apparently told teachers and parents, who had complained about the schools situation, to lessen the number of school hours so that the toilets won’t be necessary.
DA Eastern Cape Education spokesperson Edmund van Vuuren said that he is very concerned that the Department is not fulfilling its responsibility to the school.
“This is totally absurd; its responsibility of the Department to see that there are ablution facilities, and to see that those ablution facilities are in a very hygienic condition and it is not taking place” van Vuuren added.
Van Vuuren also said that he wrote a letter to the Department and has asked them to intervene and wants to see the outcome of the letter will be.
