The Democratic Alliance said rape and sexual violence against women is a national emergency.

The DA will be calling for a review of the Sexual Offences Act. DA Member of parliament Lindiwe Mazibuko said we must fight this scourage of violence against our people with the same level of determination as we did the fight against Apartheid.

Mazibuko’s Spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube said that less than two percent of the police officers have been trained to respond according to sexual offences learning programme.

“Only 57 of the police stations can locate a copy of the Sexual Offences Act, and only 51 have the regulations on hand” Gwarube added.

Gwaruba also said that rape kits are not distributed effectively, and many police stations do not have any.
