The Department of Correctional Services has revealed that it has employed 2,954 unemployed youth in the 2012.

This is through the departments learnership and internship programmes.

Ministerial Spokesperson Logan Maistry said as of the 1st of March 2013, 943 learners were appointed into permanent positions.

Maistry explains further that from the 1st of April 2013 all inmates will have a certificate in one hand and a skill in the other, upon being released from correctional centres.

“Correctional services Minister Sbu Ndebele said education is one of the top priorities of our government and therefore the youth of our country must carry on the task of nation building and creating a prosperous South Africa,” added Maistry.

Furthermore Maistry said they are therefore creating these opportunities for young people so that they can contribute towards building the kind of prosperous and successful society that the department envisages.
