The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa’s National Executive Committee has raised its concerns regarding shortage of nurses and ineffective HR budgetary management systems.

Denosa said the latest audit outcome on public health facilities that was released in March painted a bleak picture on the state of public health services in the country.

Denosa’s Spokesperson Sibongiseni Delihlazo said their concern is that, although they acknowledge government contracted 600 nurses, which will be deployed especially in rural areas; it is a drop in the ocean given a shortage of nurses.

“Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare, if we do not have enough of them then this will have a negative impact on the country’s health” Delihlazo added.
