Media reports on Tuesday revealed that nearly 40% of police officers in Gauteng do not have drivers` licences.

Provincial Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko said members who don’t have drivers licenses are used as crew members on response vehicles and are posted to do client server centre duties as cell guards, hospital guards, court orderlies and at victim empowerment centres.

It said the perception that they only carry out administrative duties or have desk jobs is incorrect.

MEC`s Spokesperson Thapelo Moiloa said  there are no reports that the officials have been driving around in police vehicles.

“it is not a requirement of the Police Services that upon recruitment, that a valid drivers licence anymore; that used to be the case before but it has been done away” Moiloa added.
