The United Democratic Movement has
expressed disbelief in the support Minister of Energy Susan Shabangu’s decision
to support Anglo American Platinum in its proposal to retrench 6 000
workers.
UDM President Bantu Holomisa damned
strongly criticised such actions as irresponsible.
Holomisa said rather than supporting large
scale retrenchment of workers, government should negotiate a bailout package
for Amplats and the whole mining sector in order to save the jobs of the
mineworkers, most of whom are sole breadwinners in their families.
Holomisa added that strict repayment plans
should be put in place for these bailout packages to ensure that taxpayers are
paid their monies back by relevant companies.
