The Western Cape Disaster Risk Management said human negligence resulted in deadly fires this past long weekend.

Three people died and about 50 were left homeless in places including Ocean View, Phillip, Macassar and Fish Hoek.

Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson Charlotte Powell cautioned residents to be extra careful when making fires more especial this time of the year.

Powell added that residents need to ensure that when they go to bed all electrical appliances are isolated and candles have been extinguished and also need to check and constantly remind their neighbors to do the same.
