Two separate fires kills one and leaves 13 homeless

This morning a body of a 33-year-old man was found after fire-fighters were overwhelmed by the blaze in Phillipi. 

The fire destroyed two shacks and left three people homeless. 

Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons Johannes said that the circumstances relating to the fire are unclear and an inquest docket has been opened by the police to investigate the incident.

Solomons Johannes added that the City is assisting the families with humanitarian relief aid.

Meanwhile a family of 10 was displaced by a fire in Mitchells Plain at the weekend. 

The family consisted of six adults and four minors and the fire destroyed their home in Westridge.

Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons Johannes said unfortunately the private semi detached dwelling caught alight and the people lost their belongings.

“As a result of the fire smoke and water damage the building structure and interior was also affected and was rendered uninhabitable,” added Solomons Johannes.

He added that circumstances surrounding the occurrence of the fire are unclear and authorities will probe an investigation.
