The Western Cape Education Department today said over the winter school holidays it received 31 reports of burglary and vandalism.
Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said one case was classified as major, 27 as minor and 3 as negligible.
The metro central had the most cases with a major case reported in the Metro Coast District.
Casey said despite increased security measures wherever possible, each school holiday a number of the schools fall victim to incidents of burglary and vandalism.
“We appeal to communities to be our ears and eyes and report any suspicious behaviour in and around our schools; they also have a role to play in protecting their communities’ assets.
“We believe we can further reduce vandalism in our schools if we together can take pride in these institutions and respect the role they play in our communities’ further growth” Casey further added.
