An 8 month old baby died after a fire engulfed a wendy house in Bonteheuwel on Thursday night.

Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said 8-month old Kauthar Abrahams was too young to react by escaping from the fire which claimed her life, when she later succumbed to her fatal burn wounds.

Solomons-Johannes said that the parents of the deceased minor was outside the dwelling at the time of the incident and the grandmother then noticed the incident happening rushed to the structure that was well alight in an attempted to save the child.

“Unfortunately her attempts were unsuccessful and she also suffered from smoke inhalation she was later taken to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment,” added Solomons-Johannes.

He also added that according to the preliminary investigation it is suspected that the fire started due to open flames from a lit candle that overturned and ignited the bedding.
