The Food and Allied Workers Union on Tuesday said about 451 of its members together with Parmalat employees have embarked on a protected national strike.

They are demanding a 9 percent wage increase while the company is only offering 7 percent.  Several operations plants have come to a standstill in three provinces, which are Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng.

National Negotiator for FAWU Mlamleli Pukwana said the strike is about better wages and better working conditions with the companies and this strike is a result of legal processes.

Pukwana added that workers need not to worry about, because the strike is protected and several meetings were held before the decision to embark on strike.
