First stages of the implementation of Smart ID cards introduced today

The Minister of Home Affairs Naledi Pandor today introduced the first stages of the implementation of a Smart ID Card for South Africa.

 Pandor said by adopting this system South Africa joins but a handful of attitudinally and technologically progressive countries around the world but have similar solutions. 

Ministerial Spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele explains that on the 18^th they will be issuing the smart card to the President, Deputy President of the country, former president of the country, Desmond Tutu, Winnie Mandela and others.

“That will take place at three offices two in Gauteng as well as one in Cape Town but we hope by next month which is August we would have added the other 24 offices to make it 27.

He added that they will then increase the number of offices that are able to issue the smart card.
