The Democratic Alliance said the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services has confirmed that it will be investigating the suicide of alleged serial rapist, Sifiso Makhubo at a prison in Johannesburg.

Makhubo was due to face 118 charges of rape, kidnapping, attempted murder and robbery.

The DA said in 2012 there were 20 reported suicides in correctional facilities in South Africa.

DA MP of Correctional Services James Selfe said that they have been on to the judicial inspectorate for correctional services and they will be investigating this matter.

“It is unsatisfactory for two counts, firstly because it will not provide closure for the victims of these particular crimes and second of all because it will be used as evidence by people seeking to avoid being extradited to South Africa as proof that South African prisons are not safe,” added Selfe.
