The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said at least nine rape cases involving Western Cape South African Police Services have been reported in 2012.

This follows the arrest of a police captain who allegedly raped a woman in his police van.

The Provincial MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato said the fact that police are involved is a great concern.

Ministerial Spokesperson Greg said MEC Plato has condemned this act, and is gravely concerned by the recent spate of rape incidents that have involved police officers in the Western Cape.

“Minister Plato said he does not know what went wrong in their minds for doing such horrible acts.

“This is an issue for the police leadership to look into as a matter of urgency” Wagner added.
