The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has appointed retired judge Willem van der Merwe to preside over Basic Education Director General Booby Soobrayan’s disciplinary hearing.

This comes after a march that was conducted by the South African Democratic Teachers Union in which a memorandum was handed over, containing a series of allegations against the DG.

Basic Education Department Pokesperson Lesifu Panyaza said the Minister took the memorandum to the Public Service Commission, who investigated the matter.

“Now that the report of the PSC is available, it will serve as a basis for the hearing wher DG Soobrayan will be awarded the opportunity to respond.

“The findings of the judge will be handed over to the Minister, and the Minister will take action immediately after that” Panyaza added.
