Teacher accused of beating 7 year-old with plastic pipe resigned

The Western Cape Department of Education has confirmed that the teacher charged with beating up a 7-year-old school learner at St Joseph Special School has resigned. 

It is alleged that the teacher beat the child with a plastic hosepipe. 

It has been reported that incident of corporal punishment have increased in the country. 

Departmental Spokesperson Paddy Attwell said the Department charged the teacher with serious misconduct for allegedly hitting the child with the hosepipe.

“The disciplinary hearing was scheduled for Monday, the Department disregards the resignation as a deemed dismissal in terms of the Employment of Educators Act.

“The Department may make this finding if the disciplinary process has already begun” Attwell added.
