DA disappointed in the postponement of Arms Procurement hearing

The Democratic Alliance said it is deeply disappointed that the Arms Procurement Commission’s public hearing was postponed again.

On Monday Commission chair Judge Willie Seriti agreed to a request from lawyers of the defence department for the issue of the declassification of documents before the commission to be dealt with.

The Commission will start on the 19th of August 2013.  DA Researcher and Communications Officer Alexander Leisegang said that it’s impossible that after two years the commissioner has not resolved the issue of access to confidential documents held by the department and Armscor.

“The problem must surely have been anticipated by the commission and should have been resolved before the public hearings began,” added Lesegang.

She added that in the end the further postponement of the public hearings will inevitably damage the already damaged credibility of the commission.
