The Western Cape Department of Education together with the South African Police Services and several MEC’s met with a group of educators from the Manenberg area last night, to discuss safety in schools.

This follows the recent increase of gang violence in the area which has led to schools in Manenberg being closed for two days.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said educators expressed two main concerns, the safety of educators to and from school and the on-going gang violence and shooting just outside schools premises.

Casey added that the City of Cape Town has offered to deploy an additional man power between 60 or 80 Metro Law Enforcement officers. They will be divided between schools and during school hours.

“The safety and security of our community is a national competence in terms of SAPS and they will continue to engage with SAPS when it comes to stepping up Law enforcement in the area,” Casey added.
