The Western Cape Department of Education has decided to close Manenberg schools as a result of threats to educator and learner safety.

The schools will be closed for the next two days following an increase of gang violence in the area.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said safety of learners and educators remain the WCED’s primary concern along with the longer term loss of teaching and learning time.

Casey added that the WCED is doing all it can to protect their learners and educators in school. Unfortunately we are unsure of peace and safety within the community.

The management in control of the underlying problems of gangsters and violence in Manenberg area go well beyond the capacity of the Education Department to correct.

“Our officials and educators are not law enforcement urgency's therefore the WCED depends on SAPS to ensure order within our communities so that our school system can function as normal,” Casey.
