The National Employers’ Association of South Africa has joined many organisations in expressing its concerns regarding the latest unemployment figures.

The figures show that almost 37 percent of the country’s workforce is now without a job.

On the other hand Nersa has welcomed the fact that Statistics South Africa’s recognized the impact of the number of discouraged workers which totals a further 11.2%.

Nersa Spokesperson Sya van der Walt said around 25 000 jobs were lost in the Agricultural sector during April and June this year due to minimum wage strikes that took place in farms in the Western Cape earlier this year.

Van der Walt added that Nersa is adamant that extremely innovative measures are needed to address inequalities and poverty.

“The starting point is the eradication of poverty through high levels of unemployment,” Van der Walt added.
