Western Cape Police has confirmed that
55-year-old Abdus-Salaam Ebrahim who is the National Co-ordinator for People
against Gangsterism and Drugs was arrested early this morning.
However police have declined to elaborate on
the matter. Meanwhile Pagad said Ebrahim is being held at the Gugulethu Police
Station.
Pagad’s Cassiem Parker said the arrest is an
attempt by the police to deter communities away from the fight against
gangsterism.
“Our view on this is that it is an attempt
by the police to defend drug dealers and to try and deter people from attending
our public programme tonight in Grassy Park
He also explains that this action by police
is no different to the detention without trial in the apartheid era.
Parker said that as Pagad they believe that
the politicians needs to square up to the issue and people need to hold
politicians accountable for this action by the police.
