A fire in Atlantis left a 4-year-old child dead

Several fires in Cape Town over the weekend has left one person dead and 143 people homeless. 

On Sunday morning a fire occurred at the Witsand Informal Settlements in Atlantis which left a 4-year-old child dead. 

The fire also destroyed eight structures which left 20 people homeless. 

City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said it is suspected that one of the occupants dropped an open flame that resulted in the fire.

He added that the City’s Disaster Management will be assisting the fire victims and an investigation is underway.
