Early this morning ER24 paramedics attended to an accident scene whereby a bakkie collided into the side of the bridge crossing over the Vaal River on Ascot in Vaal.

The driver was stuck inside the vehicle as his door was jammed up against the side of the bridge.

ER24 Spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the man climbed out of the window but he did not release that he was right next to the river, and he actually fell about 10 metres down into the river.

Jackson said fortunately he was not badly injured and he managed to swim through to where there was a concrete pillar in the river.  The police’s rescue team went with the boat to fetch him.

He was treated by paramedics for minor injuries and mild hypothermia symptoms and then he was transported to a nearby hospital.
