Western Cape Department of Education has confirmed that a Grade 8 learner from New Eisleben High School was stabbed on school grounds on Thursday and was rushed to hospital but sadly died on arrival.

Police have confirmed that a case of murder has been opened and no arrests have been made yet.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said MEC Donald Grant visited the family of the learner and has expressed his condolences.  The fact is this is a senseless and tragic loss of life.

Casey added that reports indicate that the incident is gang related.  It is alleged that the incident involved three other learners from the school, two in grade 10 and one in grade 11.

“The WCED has provided counselling to learners and educators both yesterday and today and we are currently assessing the security measures at the school” Casey added.
