The African Christian Democratic Party said the report released by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate painted a worrying picture of the state of the police service.

The report showed that there has been a 19% increase in incidents of death in police custody and an increase of 218% in cases of assault by police.

ACDP Parliamentary Leader Wayne Thring said the IPID is also investigating 168 cases in which policeman are accused of rape and this is some 400% increase compared to 40 cases of rape that were reported last year.

He added that this is very shocking at the state of the police officers because they are supposed to protect the public not to harm them.
