Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato on Wednesday said he will be writing to the Provincial Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer to explain to the Provincial Cabinet and the people of the province why he is denying the province a specialized gang unit.

MEC Plato said the best way to make the people of the province safe from drugs and gangs is through targeted, sustained and specialised interventions.

Ministerial Spokesperson Greg Wagner said the number drug crimes in the Free State is at 6 168 for the last financial year whereas drug crimes in the Western Cape is at 82 000.

Wagner added that for this reason the MEC feels that the province is dire need to a gang unit if it to fight drug related crimes.
