Constitutional Law
Expert Pierre de Vos has welcomed the ruling into the Khayelitsha Commission of
Inquiry.
The Constitutional Court on Tuesday ruled that the commission should go ahead; this is after
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa approached the Western Cape High Court to deem
the inquiry invalid.
Premier Helen Zille
launched the inquiry in August last year after about 20 criminals were killed
in the area last year.
De Vos said there
is absolutely nothing wrong with the premier to set such a commission to try
and find out whether there indeed police inefficiency in the area and hopefully
if findings are made they might be used to hold the police to account as the
constitution requires from the provincial government.
