The most recent crime statistics
have shown a small increase in crime in the Cape
Town City centre.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety
and Security JP Smith said the City has deployed various security initiatives
including the CCTV cameras which have brought crime down dramatically
especially in previous years in many categories to about an 8th of
what they used to be.
Smith said this year we have seen a
slight increase in muggings and bag snatching incidents. Although there is serious interpersonal or
contact crime we still have a slight increase and that will require the South
African Police and the city to adapt our strategies accordingly.
“We are also meeting to discuss how
to redeploy our assets” Smith added.
