The Democratic Alliance on Thursday said the South African Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment codes need a broader approach.

A two day summit to look at these codes is being held in Johannesburg.

President Jacob Zuma while addressing the summit said we are yet to see the growth of black industrialists despite government's aggressive focus on boosting the manufacturing sector.

DA MP of Trade and Industry Wilmot James said the codes will be gazetted on the 11th October without any further public consultation or parliamentary input.  We believe there has to be a last chance to fix the codes.

Wilmot added that the codes overall are not a bad start but there are areas that worry us because what it does not do is empower black South Africans on a broad base and we really need to change it.
