The Democratic Alliance said it welcomes the completion of the South African Human Rights Commission’s probe into the failure of government to regularly update the National Child Protection Register.

DA MP of Social Development Mike Waters said the DA will be requesting that the relevant Department’s report to Parliament monthly to provide feedback on progress made in implementing the commission’s recommendations.

Waters said the commission found that by failing to adequately maintain the Child Protection Register the Social Development Department is violating the rights of children in terms of the constitution.

Waters added that it is essential that the report results in serious action to ensure the rights of our children are protected.
