Sunday, 27 October 2013 marked the first day of the International Campaign for the Freedom of Marwan Barghouthi and all Palestinian Prisoners.

The launch of the campaign was held in Robben Island, where a declaration was signed.

Present at the launch was the wife of Marwan, Fadwa Barghouthi, South African political prisoner for 26 years, Ahmed Kathrada, as well as Palestinian heads of government together with people from the general public in support of this campaign.

Fadwa Barghouthi read a letter written by her husband for the launch. In the letter, Barghouthi said his freedom, as well as the freedom all the other Palestinian prisoners was inevitable and that it was only a matter of time. Barghouthi also made a promise to return to Robben Island as a free man to celebrate the success of this campaign.

Amhed Kathrada along with four International Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, all endorsed this campaign.

Arch-Bishop Desmond Tutu sent an e-mail in which he apologised for not being present at the launch. He also endorsed this campaign, making him the fifth Nobel Peace Prize Laureate to do so.
