Dudley added South
Africa plans to spend
R5-billion on clean energy in the coming years as it tries to decrease reliance
on coal-fired power plants, which provide 85% of its electricity.
The African Christian Democratic
today said it welcomes the investment France has
made to help Eskom finance its solar power project.
ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley said the
loan from France will
reduce emissions through solar power projects.
Government wants to cut carbon
dioxide emissions by a third over the next decade as South
Africa is a major
producer and exporter of coal.
“We have invested heavily previously
in coal fire plant and this has been necessary in terms of energy security and
ensuring that investment and economic
growth is not undermined,” Dudley said
She also said the ACDP acknowledges
and appreciates the urgent need to address threatened job
securities.
