City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security JP Smith said metal theft remains a big challenge for the city however Smith said the city’s metal theft unit has done a great job with 137 arrests made this year so far.

The unit last year conducted on average 165 scrap yard raid inspections per quarter which is up from the 130 in 2011.

The city is bringing in new technology to try and curb this surge of metal theft.

Smith said this year they want to drive the rewards policy to ensure that they get improved even more of the 60% of the success are based on those community tip offs, and the confiscations are down.
