On Thursday the metered taxi industry elected a fully representative provincial council in the Western Cape.

MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle said now the industry and its leadership will be more accountable and in time will prosper and grow in strength.

Carlisle said the metered taxi industry is a valued part of the public transport family and is a key contributor to the growth of the economy in the province.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said the point of the forming the council is to do away with some fragmentation in the industry and this fragmentation has led to overtrading and some conflicts and the council will work towards creating an environment that general and high standards are met.
