Suspect dies in police custody, in Kleinvlei

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has confirmed that it is investigating a death of a 23-year-old man who died in police custody in Kleinvlei.

It is alleged that last week two Constables saw two males in Muller Street where they were conducting stop and search patrols.

23-year-old Bradley Abrahams was searched and police found tik on him.

The suspect allegedly escaped from a police van outside the police station but was rearrested.

IPID Spokesperson Moses Dlamini said Abrahams allegedly escaped from police custody. The policemen chased and caught him. He was taken back to the police van and he was bleeding at the time.

Dlamini added that, police tried to take Abrahams to holding cells in Mfuleni, but they were told to take him to hospital instead. He died when he arrived at Tygerberg Hospital, after being taken in an ambulance.

He concluded by saying that the investigation into the issue has started.
