The Western Cape Department of Education said about 216 schools have applied to become non-fee schools in 2014.

The offer which was made in October was to help funding challenges which schools face as a result of the non-payment of school fees by parents.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said 102 schools will benefit from this initiative which will cost a R12 million in 2014/2015.

Casey said MEC Grant will now declare 216 additional schools as no fee schools and about R 19 million has been set aside for the remainder of the 2013/14 financial year.
