The ACDP has condemned in the violent actions of protestors in Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape.

The protest saw private and public property damaged, as well as shops being looted in the area earlier on Friday.

ACDP Member of Parliament Cherryllyn Duddley said the ACDP recognises and respects the rights of members from different communities in South Africa to protest.

“The challenge, however, is that all too often this right to protest is not tempered with the responsibility to protest within the ambits of the law,” Dudley added

She further added that The ACDP supports the right of the poor and marginalised sectors of society to have access to quality service delivery, water, electricity and housing, but they cannot condone the method used in on Friday’s protests to attempt to access these services.

“As political campaigns gather momentum the potential for increased violence is great as unscrupulous opportunists stir up trouble and use communities to advance their own personal or party agendas,” Dudley said.
