Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle together with Metrorail Regional Manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz said they are disappointed at disgruntled security guards who damaged train signals on Monday.

The security guards believed to belong to CHIPPA securities cut out signal cables at Stock Road, Lentegeur, Nyanga, Heideveld and Khayelitsha which caused major delays and some trains having to be cancelled.

Swartz said it is unacceptable that commuters should be held ransom by people with hidden agenda.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said charges of sabotages was laid against these security guards by MEC Carlisle, MEC Herron and Metrorail’s Manger Swartz.

Dube added that MEC Carlisle was glad to see Chippa security owner Simon Mpengezi also laying charges against his employees responsible for this action.

A reward of up to R25 000 has been offered by Metrorail for anyone who can provide information that would lead to a conviction.
