The Congress of South African Trade Union said it is sickened by the rape and murder of an 8-year-old in Uniondale on Friday.

Cosatu has joined the South African Democratic Teachers Union in calling for the harshest sentences for those found guilty of committing dreadful acts of rape and abuse committed against women and children.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said the murder of this defenseless eight-year-old illustrates why we need a campaign like the 16 days of activism of no violence against women and children.

“It will make us more determined to support this campaign so that we can put a stop to these brutal crimes against women and children which are particularly bad in South Africa” Craven added.
